Using a Palm for studying japanese 2(cont.)
I have installed some programs by now and my verdict is that i will not need the electronic diccionary (denshijishio) too much. here are some advntages and desadvantages comparing the electronic diccionaries and the palm:
ADVANTAGES
Can use Eijiro English<>Japanese Dictionary (it can be used for free in internet in this site http://www.alc.co.jp/ ). It may be better than the diccionaries in denshijishios.
You can input Kanji by writting on the palm. In common denshijishios, kanji can be looked up by stroke count and radical and takes more time to find. Actually by writting the kanji can be better for learning it in my opinion. PAdict is an excellent software for this.
Denshijishios are aimed to japanese public, learning to use can be difficult at the begining (but after passing the learning curve it is easy to use).
A palm is more portable, just take it everywhere.
Palm can be not only as diccionary but many other tasks:
read pdfs, conect to internet(if it has WiFi), keep track of
expenses, schedule, addresses and phone numbers,
see the news of your country and world
(japanese TV news dont say nothing), watch videos in
divx, mp3, pictures, can be used as HP calculator,
excellent alarm clock, and also there are games and emulators :p
can use other software for learning such as supermemo and kingkanji
DISADVANTAGES
Looking for a word takes more time in the palm. Denshijishios have a keyboard. For the basic japanese class denshijishio is more practical, since all kanji use furigana (readings), so you dont need to look for kanji (you can search a word very quickly wile the teacher is speaking).
anyway for real world, witting the kanji in the palm is very useful.
Palms are more expensive(but not too much, since denshijishos are also expensive), need also SD card, min 256Mb
I have not found a decent spanish<>japanese dictionary for the palm (with example sentences), the one in my denshijishio is very good and i will try t find the version of it to run in the palm as well, this would be the only point that would keep me to use the denshijishyo. Also the english-english diccionary is useful in the denshijishio (and larousse spanish-spanish also). i will see if it is possible to get them in the palm as well.
If you have to choose one, i would recomend the palm if you have the money and if you will use its other functionalities. for only a desk dictionary, denshijisho is ok. other option is not having a diccionary at all. most of students still dont have one but i think it is a useful tool.
UPDATE: Now "super memo" v.2 eneables high resolution. this program is good to learn anything but can be used to learn kanji using todd rudick's cards and vocabulary .
